| Q&A: Colorectal cancer |
| What’s the difference between colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy, and why should you care? In the second half of our look at colorectal cancer, an expert talks about screening for the disease. |
| The amount and type of carbohydrates a woman eats can affect her risk of breast cancer. Foods with a high "glycemic load" such as pretzels and potatoes can cause blood sugar levels to surge rapidly. Lower glycemic load foods cause a slower change. Swedish researchers recently found that women with high-glycemic load diets were at significantly higher risk of breast cancer. They suspect high-glycemic load diets may increase concentrations of insulin and sex hormones, which might boost the development and spread of breast cancer cells. The study supports the breast-health benefits of a low-glycemic load diet. The American Cancer Society has information on other ways women can reduce their risk of breast cancer, too. |
