Fires may have put off the 11th Annual Los Angeles Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer, but they did not extinguish it: The Walk has been rescheduled for Nov. 18.
Originally set to take place at the Duarte, Calif., campus on Oct. 28, Walk for Hope entailed a 5-kilometer walk and 1-kilometer leisure walk, as well as a dedication lane and giveaways from corporate sponsors. However, extensive fires in the Los Angeles area compromised air quality, leading City of Hope leaders to move the event to another weekend.
“Our postponement of the event out of consideration for the health of attendees was met with overwhelming support, and we are expecting many if not all of our registered walkers to join us on the 18th,” said Michael A. Friedman, M.D., president and chief executive officer of City of Hope.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the Walk will start at 10 a.m., followed by live music. The Walk will take place entirely within the campus. Participants can still continue to raise funds, as well. More information and updates are available at www.walk4hope.org/la.
Given the proximity to Thanksgiving, attendees will be encouraged to walk not only for hope but also in gratitude for the lives of those affected by breast cancer and the progress made in research and treatment, Friedman noted.
