Robert R. Klevecz, Ph.D., professor in the Division of Biology, died from cancer on May 12. He was 69.
Klevecz was an accomplished scientist who joined City of Hope in 1967. Over the course of more than four decades, he examined the complexities of cell division in mammals, receiving much recognition among peers for his work. Most recently, Klevecz made inroads to understanding how cells time their growth. The work, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, holds implications for how some cancers might arise and one day could help clinicians time the delivery of chemotherapy and radiation therapy to make the most of treatment.
Klevecz joined City of Hope from Yale University, where he was a postdoctoral fellow. He received his doctorate in cell biology from the University of Texas, Austin, and University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital.
“He is remembered as our good colleague, friend and mentor, and as a scientist with perpetual enthusiasm for his research,” said Gerd Pfeifer, Ph.D., Lester M. and Irene C. Finkelstein Chair in Biology.
Funeral services were private, but a memorial service open to all City of Hope
staff members is scheduled for June 2 at 4 p.m. in the City of Hope Visitor Center.
