When new employees arrive at the City of Hope campus, they may notice that it
has its own language of acronyms and terms — a language that might leave them lost at times and too embarrassed to ask what an abbreviation means.

Now City of Hope staff members have a resource that can help: a new booklet of
acronyms, terms and definitions available on the employee intranet. The booklet covers hundreds of terms from AHP (allied health professionals) to WIMSC (Web Information Management Steering Committee).

The idea for the booklet first began when executive officer Elizabeth Dunne joined
City of Hope in 2007. Dunne became concerned that City of Hope board members,
who need to understand a wide spectrum of activities at City of Hope, might not recognize the words and phrases, so she set out to create a booklet that would help. After the booklet was completed, the Executive Team and Operations Team reviewed it to assure that the major and often-used terms and acronyms were included.

Today, the booklet is available to all employees at City of Hope online. Employees can view it simply by going to the intranet home page and first clicking on “EZ-Ref,”
then “Publications and Collateral” and finally “Acronyms and Terms.”

“We drew upon resources from across the organization to compile the Acronyms and Terms Booklet,” Dunne said. “This will be a valuable tool that is accessible on the intranet as a reference document, and I have received numerous favorable e-mails and comments from physicians, researchers and staff. I would like to thank everyone for their contributions to the effort. “

The online booklet will be updated twice a year.
