Terry Blackwood Sr., former City of Hope chief financial officer, died March 22 following a two-year battle with brain cancer. He was 54.

Blackwood joined City of Hope as chief financial officer in 1998 after serving as a consultant. During his 14-year association with the organization, he served as a key member of the executive leadership team and spearheaded numerous initiatives that improved the organization’s financial standing. Notable among his accomplishments was the issuance of a $60 million bond in 2006 to help finance construction and renovation in the hospital.
“Terry contributed immeasurably to our institution and was devoted to all that our organization stands for,” said Michael A. Friedman, M.D., president and chief executive officer. “He was an exemplary professional and a good person, and we will miss him.”
Blackwood was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Healthcare Financial Management Association, which granted him its “Medal of Honor” award, one of many awards he received for his professionalism as a hospital administrator.
An active community member, Blackwood served for several years as treasurer of the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership. He was a member of the Tournament of Roses Committee in Pasadena, Calif., as well as the Pasadena Optimist Club. He also coached his children’s youth soccer teams for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela, daughters Amanda and Nicole, and son Taylor.
Funeral services were held March 25 in Webster, Texas, near his home in Friendswood. His family requested that donations be made to City of Hope in lieu of flowers.
