Office products executives recently came together to recognize one of their prominent leaders and commemorate the industry’s 27th year of partnership with City of Hope.
City of Hope’s National Office Products Industry, held its annual Spirit of Life® gala at the Chicago Hilton on Sept. 24, honoring Jack G. Truong, Ph.D., vice president of 3M. He led Inspiring Hope, the industry’s 2009 fundraising initiative, which raised more than $7.2 million for City of Hope this year.

Truong received The Spirit of Life Award, City of Hope’s most prestigious honor, at the dinner, which drew more than 650 guests including more than 40 leaders and executives from large international office product retailers and wholesalers from Japan, Taiwan, Russia, Europe and South America. This was the first year the campaign expanded internationally.
“I’m honored to receive The Spirit of Life Award and proud to support City of Hope and its mission to turn innovative new research into new treatments for patients who need them,” Truong said. “The relationship and partnership between 3M and City of Hope proves that possibilities are endless when it comes to supporting the lifesaving work of researchers and physicians.”
A global manufacturing company, 3M is a longtime supporter of City of Hope — particularly through the activities of its Office Supplies Division, overseen by Truong since 2003.
Among numerous initiatives, the company’s Post-it Super Sticky Notes “Stick Up for the Cause” promotion has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast cancer research, treatment and education at City of Hope since its inception in 2004. 3M has also served as a sponsor for City of Hope’s national series of fundraising walks, Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer Nationally Presented by Staples.
To join in the efforts, NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, captain of 3M’s No. 16 car, partnered with City of Hope to record a public service announcement that helped raise awareness and nearly $500,000 in donations for 3M’s gift-matching program.
“We’re pleased to honor Jack for his tremendous support for City of Hope and the search for a cure for cancer and other life-threatening diseases,” said Matt Dodd, City of Hope senior director of development. “Through his commitment and generosity, together we can increase the chances of more efficient, targeted treatments for patients suffering from cancer.”
Next year, the office products industry will honor David Williamson, executive vice president and general manager of MeadWestvaco’s Office Products Group. The industry group’s 2010 Spirit of Life gala will take place Sept. 23, 2010, at the Chicago Hilton. In total, the group has raised more than $77 million to support City of Hope.
