Jerry Ruiz, technology specialist in the Department of Information Technology Services, died the morning of Jan. 29 in an automobile accident on the 210 Freeway east of Buena Vista Street. He was 33.

Ruiz joined City of Hope in 2002, providing audio/visual support for faculty, staff and students. He also partnered with members of the Division of Clinical Cancer Genetics where, in addition to providing audio/visual support, he produced educational modules for the division’s Cancer Risk Counseling Program.

“Jerry played a critical role in developing materials that impact patient care throughout the world,” said Jeffrey Weitzel, M.D., chief of the Division of Clinical Cancer Genetics. “He was a valued team member and friend. He always had an easy smile, and we will miss him.”

Ruiz was active in campus activities and was well-known at City of Hope.

“Jerry was a treasured colleague and a dependable team member,” said Michael A. Friedman, M.D., president and chief executive officer. “He was consistently willing to go the extra mile in support of our mission and was a true asset to City of Hope. He will be greatly missed.”

Ruiz is survived by his parents Jose and Esperanza Ruiz, his siblings Michael, Erick and Joe, and his girlfriend Denise Avila.

The Information Technology Services Department is accepting contributions for Ruiz’s family. Donations should be sent to Stacey La Beau, executive assistant in the department, at the Monrovia Administrative Center, Office No. 2508.
