Shoelaces are tied. Race numbers are pinned carefully to shirts. Fingers pause expectantly over the buttons of thousands of stopwatches — and with the blast of a horn, the race begins.
Tens of thousands of runners, walkers and wheelchair racers will swarm Dodger Stadium on March 19 and 20 for the Honda LA Marathon and the LA 5K, and City of Hope employees will be among them. They not only will raise their own fitness levels; they also will raise funds for cancer research through ThinkCure.

ThinkCure, the official charity of the Los Angeles Dodgers, supports collaborative cancer studies at City of Hope and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. It is one of two lead charities for the Honda LA Marathon, one of the largest road races in the nation.
“By collecting pledges to support ThinkCure, all of us at City of Hope can show how much we believe in our mission and partnership with the Los Angeles Dodgers,” said Stephen J. Forman, M.D., Francis and Kathleen McNamara Distinguished Chair in Hematology and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation. “By our participation in the event, whether in the 5K or the marathon, we further demonstrate our commitment to ThinkCure, which helps with our research at City of Hope.”
Employees can join the City of Hope team online by visiting www.crowdrise.com/HopeThinkCure. Then, they can sign up for either the 5K race (3.1 miles) to be held March 19 or the marathon (26.2 miles) on March 20 at www.lamarathon.com.
City of Hope ThinkCure team members will receive a City of Hope running cap. They also are eligible for fundraising incentives such as a technical fabric shirt and tickets to Dodgers games. In addition, they may qualify for special promotions in the weeks leading up to the event and will have access to a special Dodger Stadium suite on race day.
Anyone who already has signed up for either race can still enroll as a City of Hope team member on the www.crowdrise.com/HopeThinkCure Web page.
