Introduction
Compassion was the driving force that led to the founding of City of Hope in 1913. That spirit lives on at City of Hope which today provides help to millions of people who are battling life-threatening diseases.
Located just northeast of Los Angeles in Duarte, California, City of Hope is a most unusual and remarkable place—where compassion and leading-edge care go hand-in-hand. Here, some of the world’s most knowledgeable physicians, researchers, scientists and health care professionals join forces to treat—and to one day cure—cancers and other life-threatening diseases. These distinguished experts provide state-of-the-art patient care and also conduct leading-edge research.
City of Hope is one of just a handful of Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States as designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). At City of Hope more than 300 physicians and scientists and over 2,500 employees work to find the causes of and cures for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, including diabetes and HIV/AIDS. City of Hope is located on over 112 beautifully landscaped acres. Its modern Helford Clinical Research Hospital has 217 licensed beds, 84 of which are devoted to bone marrow transplantation patients.
More than 290,000 volunteers and donors worldwide support City of Hope and make it possible to continue the lifesaving work done here. Approximately 20 percent of our funding comes from private support through charitable contributions.
Initially conceived as a haven for those stricken with tuberculosis, the past nine decades have seen many historic milestones establishing City of Hope as an internationally recognized biomedical research institution focusing on cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases.
