Targeted Therapeutics: Attacking Disease on the Molecular Level (4/2006)

By investigating the mechanisms that activate or inhibit respective genes, researchers are developing “designer” drugs to target specific disease-causing molecules. TomoTherapy HI-ART System®
City of Hope is one of the first medical centers in the U.S. to offer helical TomoTherapy. This new, extremely accurate technology offers City of Hope patients an important advancement cancer treatment. TomoTherapy combines two types of radiation technologies, and uses hundreds of pencil-like "beamlets" that rotate around the cancer, sculpting to the shape of tumor. This more precise delivery of radiation helps spare the surrounding normal tissues and reduce complications.

George Johnson, his doctor and wife tell the story of his radical laparoscopic prostatectomy at City of Hope. This treatment, like brachytherapy and computer-directed radiation offers better options that ever before to men of any age. At just 13 months, Marshall Cotta was diagnosed with a rare and dangerous brain tumor. The standard suggested therapies would likely be ineffective, or disabling. His parents brought Marshall to City of Hope in search of the type of innovation for which it is known - and they found it. Here, doctors tailored a new protocol specifically for Marshall, using his own stem cells to speed his healing. Inspired by their experience, the Cottas founded Marshall’s Roundup, which today raises funds for pediatric neuro-oncology research for City of Hope.

Matt & Cindy
After 14 months of conventional chemotherapy, 30-year old Matt Phelan’s lymphoma was worsening. He turned to City of Hope for a life-saving bone marrow transplantation. A picture of his unknown marrow donor was placed on his bedside during the transplant. Three years later, Matt (now a healthy college graduate), put a name to the face when he met Cindy – the only match among 900,000 in the registry. Watch their emotional reunion.

Skin cancer expert Dr. Lily Lai of City of Hope recommends reducing skin cancer risk by avoiding exposure to the midday sun, applying sunscreen often, and wearing hats and long-sleeve shirts. All skin types and colors are susceptible to skin cancer, and children are especially vulnerable. This video news release contains other suggestions about skin protection.

A City of Hope Cancer Center research team, encouraged by many years of successful laboratory studies, is conducting a study in women to measure the ability of grape seed extract to block the natural estrogen-making process in post menopausal women. Excess estrogen is a known cause of breast cancer. Healthy post-menopausal women are participating in the study.

City of Hope has created the “I Walk For…” PSA campaign designed to support this year’s Walk for Hope.  These inspirational vignettes document the various reasons that motivate our walkers in our annual events established to raise donations for the treatment, research, education and eventual cure for breast cancer.
