Overview

Breast cancer will affect 1 in 8 women during their lifetime. In 2008 breast cancer will kill more American women than any cancer except lung cancer. The NCI estimates that in 2007 there were approximately 180,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the U.S and over 40,000 cancer deaths directly attributable to breast cancer.

Ovarian cancer remains the most common cause of cancer death from gynecologic cancer in the US. It is estimated that 1 in 70 American women will develop ovarian cancer in her lifetime. Since early disease is relatively nonsymptomatic most patients are diagnosed in an advanced stage of disease which carries a less than optimal prognosis for long term survival.

Uterine cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer, accounting for nearly 3% of all cancers among women. Endometrial cancer, which originates in the inner lining of the uterus, accounts for about 90% of these uterine cancers.

Given the frequency of occurrence of these women’s cancers and the high probability of death from breast and ovarian cancers there is a need to develop new treatment paradigms to optimize patient outcomes. Over the past decades scientists and physicians at City of Hope have devoted their expertise to advancing new techniques to diagnose and treat these women’s cancers. This educational activity has been designed by these experts, representing multiple disciplines, to review and critique the current status, leading edge developments and future directions in the treatment of breast, ovarian and uterine cancers.
