Executives from communications, finance and health care bring expertise to institution

LOS ANGELES, April 9, 2008 – City of Hope has appointed three new members to its board of directors. Communications industry veteran Eddy W. Hartenstein, financial executive Michael E. Keane and health care executive Kathleen McNamara bring their experience and leadership to help guide City of Hope’s growth as a national leader in cancer research, treatment and education.
“The diverse professional experience and insight these three individuals bring to our board is invaluable,” said Terry Peets, chair, City of Hope board of directors. “City of Hope is focused on rapidly accelerating the translation of scientific discovery into better treatments. The additional leadership contributed by these individuals will help foster that effort.”
Eddy W. Hartenstein is the retired vice chairman of The DIRECTV Group Inc., a world-leading provider of digital television entertainment services previously known as Hughes Electronics Corporation. Prior to his position as vice chairman, Hartenstein was chairman and chief executive officer of the company, during which time he assembled the DIRECTV management team and guided its strategic efforts to launch the country’s premier direct-to-home entertainment distribution service. Prior to joining DIRECTV, Hartenstein served as president of Equatorial Communications Services Company in Mountainview, Calif., from 1984 to 1987. He joined Hughes Aircraft Company in 1972, and from 1981 to 1984, was vice president of Hughes Communication, where he directed the marketing and development of the original Galaxy satellite fleet which served the broadcast television and cable programming industries. Hartenstein holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering and mathematics from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, and a M.S. degree in applied mechanics from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
Michael E. Keane, until most recently vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) of Computer Sciences Corporation in El Segundo, Calif., is a financial executive with experience in finance, strategic analysis, operations, accounting, management and administration. Before moving into the role of CFO in 2006, he served as the company’s vice president of finance. From 1997 to 2005, Keane was senior vice president and CFO of Unova Inc., a $1.3 billion industrial technologies company comprised of global businesses in automated data collection, mobile computing and industrial automation systems. Prior to that, he served as senior vice president and CFO for Western Atlas Inc., and held a series of financial management positions at Litton Industries Inc., including assistant treasurer and director of pensions and insurance. Both companies were located in Beverly Hills, Calif. Keane began his career as certified public accountant with Price Waterhouse in Chicago. He holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a B.S. in accounting from Illinois State University.
Kathleen McNamara, R.N., B.S.N., P.H.N., is a health care executive with more than 19 years of experience building entrepreneurial and profitable health care operations via new start-ups, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic planning. She most recently served as a consultant to Priority Healthcare/Express Scripts Inc., and prior to that was president and chief executive officer of Integrity Healthcare Services Inc. Previously, as a partner at McNamara and Associates, she consulted for venture capital companies on product development, as well as with infusion therapy companies on the development of clinical and reimbursement programs.
McNamara is a licensed registered nurse in Kentucky and California, and holds a bachelor’s in nursing from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles.
