George Megaw joined the OTL as the associate director in June 2010 and was promoted to director of OTL in November 2010. He helps to manage OTL’s core functions, the identification, protection and commercialization of City of Hope’s intellectual property as well as City of Hope’s research partnerships with industry. George has responsibility for intellectual property licenses, agreements for corporate sponsored research on basic and translational research, and agreements with external partners who seek to access City of Hope's state-of-the-art 20,000 square-foot biologics manufacturing facility. Prior to joining City of Hope, George worked in technology transfer for several years, both as a licensing associate with the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) Research Foundation and, before that, as a technology manager with the Defence Diversification Agency, the then technology transfer arm of the U.K. government’s Ministry of Defence. Prior to embarking on a career in technology transfer, George completed two post-doctoral fellowships, earned a Ph.D. in virology from the University of Glasgow and a B.Sc. in biological sciences from the University of Ulster.

Matthew Grunseth joined the OTL as a licensing manager in June 2008. He is responsible for evaluating invention disclosures, directing intellectual property prosecutions, negotiating collaboration and license agreements, and working with inventors and industry professionals to successfully commercialize new technologies. Before joining the OTL, Matthew worked in the Los Alamos National Laboratory Technology Transfer Department. He is a certified patent agent and has earned an M.B.S. from the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences and a B.S. in cellular biology and genetics from the University of Maryland at College Park.

Ryan Kelly joined the OTL as a licensing manager in May 2010. He is responsible for negotiating all types of agreements, including license, collaboration, sponsored research, inter-institutional, material transfer and confidentiality agreements. He is also responsible for evaluating invention disclosures, directing patent prosecution, marketing City of Hope technologies toward commercialization and working with City of Hope faculty through the early stages of their entrepreneurial endeavors. Before joining the OTL, Ryan trained as a postdoctoral fellow at The Scripps Research Institute and worked in Scripps’ Office of Technology Development. He earned a Ph.D. in immunology from the University of Minnesota and a B.S. in biochemistry from California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo
Calvin Chen

Calvin Chen joined the OTL as a licensing manager in June 2011. He is responsible for executing material transfer, confidentiality and research collaboration agreements. He also helps out with the marketing of City of Hope technologies to various commercial partners. Prior to joining the OTL, Calvin worked as a business development and licensing specialist at the University of Southern California’s Stevens Institute for Innovation, their technology licensing office. Calvin earned bachelor degrees in molecular cellular biology and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley.

Sharon Kwan joined the OTL as a licensing manager in May 2012. She is responsible for facilitating agreements with external parties who utilize City of Hope’s biologics manufacturing facility, evaluating invention disclosures, marketing technologies, and negotiating collaboration and license agreements. Before joining the OTL, Kwan worked at The Scripps Research Institute in the Office of Technology Development and was responsible for material transfer agreements, confidentiality agreements, collaboration agreements and reagent licenses (mice, antibodies, vectors, research tools). She earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a B.S. in chemistry from Harvey Mudd College.

Chanel Parrish joined the OTL in November 2004. Known as the “Gate Keeper,” she conducts day-to-day operations and is responsible for developing workflow systems and procedures. Chanel is also point of contact for confidentiality agreements and involved in marketing. Prior to joining the OTL, Chanel worked in the staffing industry, specializing in legal recruiting.
