 William "Marty" Sargeant

Chief Operating Officer

As chief operating officer at City of Hope, William “Marty” Sargeant oversees operations within the medical center, including patient care and clinical research, and Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope. 

His responsibilities include overseeing facilities and information technology for City of Hope, as well as leading strategic development and implementation of policies and procedures to support City of Hope’s short- and long-term goals. He is a member of City of Hope’s Executive Team.

Before joining City of Hope in 2011, Sargeant served as chief operating officer at Cleveland Clinic Florida. In that role he led operational support initiatives that addressed physician turnover, cost management and programmatic investment, and he oversaw the opening of two community-based ambulatory practices.

Prior to assuming the role of chief operating officer, Sargeant held numerous positions of increasing responsibility at Cleveland Clinic Florida and at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, including administrator in the office of the chief of staff for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and chief administrative officer of the children’s hospital in Ohio.

Sargeant began his professional career as an F-15 combat fighter pilot and as an instructor pilot in the United States Air Force. He is the recipient of two Air Force Commendation Medals. He received a bachelor’s degree with distinction in economics and modern languages from the Virginia Military Institute and a Master of Business Administration degree from Case Western Reserve University.
