You're not getting any younger, and neither is the rest of America. As people age, their chances of developing cancer rise — and age makes cancer treatment more complex, too. City of Hope physicians are leading much-needed studies to improve care for older patients, pursuing more effective treatments and better quality of life.

"American Idol" fans remember Sherman Pore from his emotional audition for the TV program last spring, when he sang in honor of his wife, who died of ovarian cancer. Now Pore has released a CD that will benefit City of Hope.

Call them the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of genetics. They're proto-oncogenes: genes that cells require to grow, but when they're damaged, they cause cancer. One such gene might play an important part in leukemia and lymphoma.

Cancer can be a frightening diagnosis, but more people are surviving the disease than ever before. About 9.8 million survivors are living in the United States alone. Breast cancer survivors make up the largest group (22 percent) followed by prostate cancer survivors (17 percent) and colorectal cancer survivors (11 percent).
