While diabetes drugs can save lives, a recent major study showed that people on their way to developing type 2 diabetes actually can prevent the disease through diet and exercise. Among those with "pre-diabetes," the Diabetes Prevention Program study indicated that dietary and activity changes could delay the disease better than medications can. Just 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity, together with a 5- to-10 percent drop in body weight, produced a 58 percent reduction in diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.
