| Chewing gum can speed your recovery from colon surgery. Recent research shows patients who chewed gum recovered bowel function about a day earlier than those who didn’t. And some were able to leave the hospital as much as 2.5 days earlier. Researchers believe gum chewing promotes the production of saliva, gastrointestinal hormones and secretions from the pancreas, all of which stimulate bowel recovery. But the benefits don’t stop there. Faster recovery could save the United States about $100 million in health-care costs each year. So far, though, there’s no word on the benefits of blowing bubbles. Information on colon cancer, including risk factors and screening, is available online from the National Cancer Institute. |
