Sweet holiday spice may be cancer’s bitter enemy |
| Those holiday treats you’re baking might contain the makings of an effective treatment for cancer. Researchers have found that compounds in one of the oldest and most popular spices in the world can starve tumors. |
| Tweaking the targeted therapy |
|
 |
| Targeted therapies such as Tarceva, Vectibix and Erbitux can be a boon to many cancer patients. But they also carry uncomfortable side effects for some patients. Researchers may have found a way to fix that and even boost the drugs' power. |

| It’s shaping up to be an exciting season for the National Hockey League’s Los Angeles Kings. And it’s getting even better now that the team has named January 2010 as its “Month of Hope” in support of cancer research and treatment. |
| Heavy drinking ups the risk of prostate cancer. Researchers who studied more than 10,000 men found that those who drank 1.7 ounces of alcohol — the equivalent of four shots of hard liquor — five or more days a week had twice the likelihood of developing high-grade prostate cancer than more moderate drinkers. High-grade prostate cancer is a more aggressive form of the disease; 10-year survival drops 30 to 40 percent as compared to low-grade disease. Though the study was too small to make a definite link between alcohol and prostate cancer, researchers believe the finding might be enough to add prostate cancer to the list of malignancies affected by alcohol consumption. The American Cancer Society has more on risk factors for prostate cancer. |
