Did you know?

Tumors can cause depression. Researchers have long known that many cancer patients suffer from depression, but new research now suggests tumors themselves may actually contribute to the mental state. The study, recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that tumors produce increased amounts of compounds that are linked to depression and travel to the brain. The research also showed that tumors can change the way genes behave in the area of the brain that controls emotion. Though more study is needed, the work reveals that a patient’s emotional reaction to cancer could, at least in part, have biological roots.
