Child abuse may increase cancer risk. Canadian researchers found that adults who were physically abused as children were nearly 50 percent more likely to develop cancer than those who weren’t abused. According to the study’s lead author, the increased risk may arise from higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The findings could provide another important guideline for determining a person’s overall cancer risk. The American Cancer Society has information on coping with stress.
