Did you know?
Dogs may be able to detect prostate cancer. In a bid to reduce false-positive prostate cancer test results, French researchers trained a dog to distinguish between urine samples from healthy men and those from men with prostate cancer. Testing the dog, they then asked it to check 66 urine samples. The dog correctly identified all samples from men with the disease and indicated only three false positives, mistaking healthy samples for those with cancer. (And one of those men later developed the disease.) The researchers believe the dog may smell chemicals unique to cancer cells. If so, it might be possible to create a device that can duplicate the results. The National Cancer Institute has more information on prostate cancer detection.
