Green tea may lower the risk of lung and blood cancers. In a study out of Taiwan, researchers found that drinking one cup or more of green tea a day lowered smokers’ risk of lung cancer by 13 fold. Nonsmoking tea-totalers had a fivefold lower risk. The researchers and the American Lung Association both warned, however, that the risk-lowering effects were no match for quitting smoking or avoiding the dangerous habit, which are the surest ways to reduce risk. In a separate study, Japanese researchers found that people who drank five or more cups of green tea lowered their risk of blood and lymph cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma, by as much as 48 percent compared to those who drank one cup or less. Both research teams agree that more study is needed to confirm the potential benefits of the leafy beverage.
