Belly fat may increase the risk of liver cancer’s return. Japanese researchers compared recovering liver cancer patients with high amounts of gut fat with other similar but slimmer patients. After a year, they found that liver cancer returned in nearly 16 percent of the high-fat patients, compared to nearly 10 percent of the lower-fat patients — a difference of more than 6 percent. After three years, cancer had come back in about 75 percent of the high-fat patients, far greater than the 43 percent rate in the lower-fat group. Despite the difference in recurrence, however, the researchers saw no difference in survival. They did not check to see if losing weight after treatment lowered the odds of recurrence. The National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society each have information on the link between weight and cancer.
