Breast cancer patients might do well to boost their vitamin D levels. According to research out of the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, N.Y., many breast cancer patients have low levels of the vitamin. The dearth could lead to weaker bones and higher risk of fractures. The team studied 166 breast cancer patients undergoing treatment and found nearly 70 percent were deficient in blood levels of vitamin D. Non-white patients and those with late-stage disease had the lowest levels. Weekly high-dose supplements of the vitamin helped raise the levels back up again, however. The researchers recommend breast cancer patients take high doses of vitamin D to boost their levels and avoid potential adverse effects. The National Cancer Institute has more information about vitamin D.
