The organization has launched the largest and most comprehensive fundraising campaign in its history — one that aims to change the future of medicine. To mark the occasion and help you understand what’s at the heart of the Power of Hope campaign, we’ve also launched a new video.

Narrated by the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning star of television’s “24,” Kiefer Sutherland, the video highlights the campaign’s progress and what City of Hope is doing to rapidly convert laboratory discoveries to advances in patient care.

The Power of Hope aims to raise $1 billion by the organization’s centennial in 2013.

Prior to the public launch on April 14, the campaign has been quietly building momentum. Monies from the campaign already have boosted City of Hope’s mission by supporting construction of advanced new research and clinical facilities, such as the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Cancer Immunotherapeutics & Tumor Immunology and the Michael Amini Transfusion Medicine Center.

Several endowments have supported appointment of key faculty members and bolstered educational programs. The campaign will increase these endowments, which are critical to City of Hope's ability to recruit and retain expert faculty, sustain innovative research and teaching and enhance compassionate care.

Helping to back the Power of Hope campaign, a number of celebrities and sports organizations have joined Sutherland to spread the word about City of Hope. Singer and actress Miley Cyrus, pop sensations the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato, NASCAR greats Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle, the National Hockey League’s Los Angeles Kings and Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA all have recently added their voices to the chorus of City of Hope supporters.

Tony Markel, vice chair of the Markel Corp., one of the largest property and casualty insurance companies in the United States, heads the Power of Hope campaign as its national campaign chair. A longtime supporter of City of Hope, Markel established the Markel/Friedman Peritoneal Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at City of Hope in 2008 in memory of his late wife, Susan.

“As supporters of City of Hope, we feel a tremendous sense of pride in this institution’s legacy,” said Markel. “To fully realize our mission of conducting innovative research to improve therapies and save lives, we must recommit ourselves to ensure promising research continues and that we secure a future without cancer and diabetes.”

The Power of Hope video, narrated by Sutherland, is available on City of Hope’s YouTube channel.
