Did you know?
Even low levels of cigarette smoke can impact lung health. According to to a recent study, exposure to small amounts of tobacco smoke can cause genetic changes in lung cells, which may lead to disease such as lung cancer. After sorting 121 people into three groups — nonsmokers, low-exposure smokers and active smokers — the researchers took small samples of the cells lining their airways. Smoke affects these cells first. The scientists then scanned the cells’ genes and found 370 that changed their activity when exposed to even low smoke levels. The finding lends further genetic evidence of the dangers both of smoking and secondhand smoke. The National Cancer Institute offers free help for smokers who want to quit.
