Did you know?
Sleep habits can affect your ability to fight cancer. Researchers have found that abnormal sleep patterns can adversely affect levels of key hormones that affect health. Cortisol and melatonin influence the body’s immune system and have the ability to prevent cancer-causing cell damage, respectively. Melatonin also affects levels of estrogen, which many breast cancers need to thrive. Poor sleep habits as well as stress can change the levels of these hormones and the timing at which levels peak and recede in the body. The changes can decrease the body’s ability both to stave off cancer and to fight the disease during treatment. Researchers recommend developing good strategies for coping with stress and ensuring proper sleep. The American Psychological Association has more information on sleep including how to get a good night’s rest.
