Microscopic image of t-cell New T cell therapy may rid lymphoma patients of cancer — for life
T cells are the guardians of the body, rooting out and destroying bacteria and other agents of infection. They also patrol for early tumor cells, but some malignant cells manage to elude them, leading to cancer. For the first time ever, researchers are reprogramming a special kind of T cell so it can recognize and eliminate lymphoma — forever.

Cancer survivors will benefit from nurses’ training program Photo of nurses station
Cancer survivorship is on the rise in the U.S. That’s great news, but it also means health professionals will need better tools to provide the best possible care for this growing population. A new program is training nurses to lead the way.

Did you know?
Adolescent girls with a family history of breast disease are more prone to developing breast disease as young women than other girls. In addition, the risk rises further when they drink alcoholic beverages. Researchers studied more than 9,000 girls ages 9 to 15 throughout the U.S. for more than 10 years, tracking family history, alcohol consumption and several other factors. They found that girls whose mothers or aunts had breast cancer or benign breast disease, which can lead to cancer, were at least twice as likely to develop benign breast disease themselves. And when they added alcohol to the mix, the girls’ risk increased with the amount of alcohol consumed. Girls with no family history of breast disease showed no increase in their risk with or without alcohol intake. The American Cancer Society has more information on breast cancer risk factors.
