| Drinking hot chocolate and other drinks rich in cocoa could help an older mind stay sharper. The benefits might rest in flavanols, naturally occurring antioxidants in cocoa. Researchers studied 90 elderly people who showed difficulty with memory, language and other mental abilities, dividing them into three groups. Each group, over the course of two months, drank a cocoa drink that had high, medium or low levels of flavanols. Those who got medium or high amounts of flavanols showed better mental skills when tested than did those who drank low levels. Researchers cautioned that the results might not apply to everyone. They also noted that chocolate can be high in fat and calories and suggested that, as is the case with most any food, moderation is important. |
