Renewed wedding vows affirm life even as cancer takes its toll |
| Cancer was closing in on them, but John and Jennifer Gregory wouldn’t let it take away their love. United for more than 26 years, the couple reached out to a City of Hope chaplain to marry them all over again. They found a touching way to celebrate their marriage and keep their hearts connected forever. |
| When should you start colorectal cancer screenings? |
| Colonoscopies start at age 50, right? Not so fast. You might need to start earlier depending on your cancer risk. A physicians’ group recently announced simple guidelines, and a City of Hope expert explains what they mean. |
| If you can’t beat ‘em, stall 'em |
| They've made progress, but researchers still haven't cured multiple myeloma. So they’re drawing from medicine's experience with HIV and other diseases. Their tactic: Use a series of new drugs and other therapies to keep cancer cells in check. |
| Genetic tests might outsmart lung cancer |
| Patients with early lung cancer are living longer thanks to improved treatments. But scientists want to boost their odds of beating the disease even more. A new genetic test could help. |
| You can add colon cancer prevention to the list of possible benefits of chocolate. Scientists in Spain recently found that cocoa can interrupt signals that can lead cells to form tumors. They also found eating more cocoa may boost the body’s ability to rid itself of old and unhealthy cells. In their study, the researchers fed rats a high-cocoa diet or a normal diet then stimulated cancerous effects in their intestines. The rats fed cocoa had fewer of the abnormal structures that can lead to colon cancer than the rats fed normally. The cocoa-fed rats’ antioxidant defenses also seemed to improve. The National Cancer Institute has more on colon cancer risk factors and tips for preventing colon cancer. |
