Separated by a generation, two boys' fates intertwine |
| Leukemia put young Gavin Wolfrank’s future in question. But a lifesaving marrow donor in England — inspired by another little boy’s struggle 30 years earlier — came to the rescue. Their story shows how time and borders are no match for a giving heart and the will to live. |
| The air is getting cleaner. At least it is in cities with the most air pollution. In its recent “State of the Air” annual report, the American Lung Association ranked cities on their short-term and year-round particle pollution and their ozone pollution, or smog. The results showed that 22 of the nation's 25 smoggiest cities had less ozone than last year and 17 of the 25 most polluted cities had their lowest particle pollution levels in the report’s 13-year history. Los Angeles topped the list in ozone pollution, but its levels were the lowest ever in the report. And L.A. no longer has the most particle pollution; Bakersfield, Calif., now owns that distinction. The cleanest cities? Santa Fe, N.M., Cheyenne, Wyo., and Prescott, Ariz. You can find the full report at www.stateoftheair.org. |
