Did you know?
Your dentist can help spot oral cancer early. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends people have their teeth examined by a qualified dentist every six months. Part of the process should be an oral cancer screening. The National Cancer Institute estimates that more than 40,000 oral cancer cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S. Five-year survival rates are about 50 percent, and early detection is key to good outcomes. Staying away from tobacco and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption can lower risk. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, a part of the National Institutes of Health, has more information about oral cancers and oral cancer exams.
