Did you know?
When checking your risk of breast and ovarian cancers, your father’s family history is important, too. Recent research suggests some health-care professionals may miss this point. Scientists found that women with a family history of disease on the mother’s side were five times more likely to receive a referral for further screening or genetic testing. The study suggests many clinicians may not realize, or at least undervalue, the fact that women can inherit risk of breast cancer from their fathers. The study results point to a strong need to raise awareness among health-care workers and patients about the importance of the father’s family history in assessing cancer risk. City of Hope has more information about who might benefit from genetic cancer risk assessment.
