Young patient shows heroic spirit, inspires others |
| He projects an incredible sense of hope and good will to those around him. He lifts spirits with sheer positive will and motivates others — even those he’s never met — to get involved. He’s battled not one but two separate blood cancers and undergone grueling treatments, wrestling with side effects that would floor a lesser being. And he’s only 7. |
| Just who are these unsung heroes? |
| With compassion and great skill — and sometimes a little tough love — these health-care pros help patients return to their normal activities following treatment. Yet, despite their crucial role, they rarely see the limelight. Let’s change that. |
| Good for the kidney, good for the brain |
| As scientists gain insight into how cancer works, they’re finding that completely unrelated cancers might work in similar ways. That's why a powerful kidney cancer drug might be just the spark of hope doctors and parents need in the fight against the most common brain tumor in kids. |
| Eating a traditional Mediterranean diet can lower your risk of certain cancers. Countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea historically have shown lowered rates of some cancers, and researchers have long thought diet may help explain why. A recent study seems to confirm the theory, finding that a diet low in red meat and dairy foods but rich in fish, vegetables and legumes, whole grains, nuts and olive oil can lower risk of breast cancer for postmenopausal women as much as 22 percent. More information on cancer risk and how to reduce it is available from the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute. |
