City of Hope social workers share information about their mission with passers-by in front of Helford Clinical Research Hospital at City of Hope.

The institution’s Department of Social Work is marking National Professional Social Work Month, a time when social workers can join together to promote the profession and advocate for issues affecting social workers and their clients. March has been national social work recognition month since 1984.

According to the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Department, social workers comprise the nation’s largest group of mental health service providers — more than psychiatrists, psychologists and psychiatric nurses combined.
