main0507 Supervisor Robert Vargas, of JDL Environmental & Demolition Services hoses down the debris to reduce airborne dust.  Demolition experts razed City of Hope's Helford Building to make room for the new Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Cancer Immunotherapeutics and Tumor Immunology.

The Helford Building was originally dedicated in 1931 as the Philadelphia-Detroit-Rabinowita Building  though most new it as the Philadeilphia Building.  It once housed 24 patients and featured screened-in balconies or patios so patients could sit outside.  Over the years, the building served several purposes, including housing for physicians, nurses and physical therapists.

City of Hope's mailroom was once located in the structure which also housed the Division of Immunology's immunochemistry resources.  It most recently served as faculty office space. (Photo by:  Alicia Di Rado)
