Walkers take a hike in the desert to fight cancer

By Carmen R. Gonzalez

More than 900 hikers recently participated in the ninth annual Hike for Hope, a trek through the scenic Indian Canyons near Palm Springs, Calif.

Eileen Stern, president of the Desert Women’s Council, organized the event.

Though organizers are still tallying funds, they project the event will raise about $140,000 to support
women’s cancer research at City of Hope. The Coachella Valley Hiking Club led participants through the Indian Canyons, with access to the area granted courtesy of the Agua Caliente Band of
Cahuilla Indians.

Hike for Hope has raised more than $1.5 million since its inception in 1998.
