main0730 Duchess helps in drive for donors

Sarah Ferguson, the Dutchess of York, City of Hope’s Michael A. Friedman and Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca congratulate Pedraja for raising awareness about bone marrow and blood donation.

Supporters attended a press conference July 9 at the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department headquarters in Monterey Park, Calif., about Pedraja’s campaign to enlist more donors in the National Marrow Donor Program. With the help of his family, Pedraja — a leukemia patient himself — organized “Driving for Donors,” a series of marrow donor registration drives in 28 American cities. Ferguson featured Pedraja in a segment on NBC’s Today Show. Driving for Donors reached City of Hope on July 13, and volunteers signed up 92 potential bone marrow donors to the registry. They also collected 48 much-needed units of blood for City of Hope patients. For more information about marrow donation, visit www.cityofhope.org/BloodDonorCenter. (Photo by: Paula Myers)
