Supporters strap on skis and hit the surf to back cancer research

By Courtney Webb

Surf, water ski and snow ski or snowboard all in one day? Some may think it a crazy idea, but on the first day of spring in 1983, a small, intrepid group proved them wrong. So began Tri-Avaganza, a fundraising event that recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Participating athletes and supporters surfed, water skied and hit the slopes, all within 24 hours, on March 15 to raise funds for City of Hope. A Web site created for the event, www.cityofhope.org/triavaganza, helps family and friends make donations supporting participants’ efforts and share photos from their adventures. This year’s participants enjoyed quality surfing, chilly water skiing (including sleet) and a foot of fresh powder for snow sking.

Hosted by longtime supporters Brooke and Rob Yates, this year’s event raised more than $18,000. Since its inception in 1983, the event has generated more than $250,000.
