Staff survey reveals CIS development is on the right track

The City of Hope Information System (CIS) will be successfully implemented and a
majority of staff members are fully committed to ensuring its development, according to a recent survey conducted to gauge the progress of the CIS project.

After CIS moved from preliminary discussions into its first phase earlier this year, CIS team members held a campus forum in March to update employees about the system’s progress. Campus staff recently took a survey that sheds light on employees’ perceptions and assessment of the project.

More than 600 employees participated in the confidential, online survey, and most
affirmed the central belief that CIS will be successfully implemented and enable them to improve their workflow. Overall, staff members are satisfied with how effectively CIS development has been communicated.

“The process of developing CIS has been a massively collaborative project, with input from the various departments, which allows the CIS team to accurately respond to their needs, while also developing the new system,” said Jim Murray, City of Hope’s chief information officer. “Feedback from the staff, whether through surveys or other channels of communication, helps us identify any issues that we need to address.”

The CIS team has not been as successful in clearly defining benefits that researchers will see, as well as how everyone — even those in nonclinical positions — has a role in improving the patient experience. Additionally, the survey identified some obstacles that need to be overcome in sharing information about CIS.

“We appreciate the time that participants put into completing the survey and we will use their feedback to design more effective programs,” said Murry.

Employees can access more detailed survey results through the CIS link on City of Hope’s main intranet page.
