Survey says: City of Hope is doctors’ answer for difficult-to-treat cancers

By H. Chung So

Doctors have selected City of Hope as one of the top eight hospitals nationwide where they are most likely to refer patients with extremely difficult cancer cases, according to AARP The Magazine. City of Hope is the only hospital in the western United States to appear on the list.

The story, called “Doctors’ Faves,” appeared in the May/June issue of the magazine. The magazine goes out to members of the Association for the Advancement of Retired Persons and has a circulation of more than 24 million.

More than 140,000 doctors were surveyed by Consumers’ Checkbook, a nonprofit research organization, to compile the list. In addition to rating their local hospitals, physicians also were asked to recommend out-of-town specialty hospitals for various hard-to-treat diseases.

“We are pleased to be recognized by our peers as a top center for patients with complex cancer,” said Robert Figlin, M.D., Arthur and Rosalie Kaplan Professor of Medical Oncology and acting director of the comprehensive cancer center. “This recognition reflects our organization’s dedication to compassionate patient care and innovative research, which enables us to provide a sophisticated level of treatment not widely available at many other facilities.”
