Poster session aims for synergy by boosting collaboration among campus researchers

When scientists combine efforts, the results often can outstrip the sum of the individuals’ contributions. With this in mind, City of Hope is bringing together researchers from across campus at its 2nd annual poster session, titled “Collaboration: Synergy for Success.”

The event, slated for July 24, aims to promote scientific excellence and foster collaboration among researchers in all areas across the campus.

“It’s natural for researchers to become very focused on their individual efforts,” said Laurett Rivera, manager of the Postdoctoral Training Office for Beckman Research Institute. “We want to bring the researchers together and open the door to new opportunities.”

Encouraged by a successful inaugural event last summer, Rivera, Dawn Eastmond, Ph.D., associate dean of the Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences, Rosie Armendariz, human resources recruiter, and Carla Morberg, clinical research training coordinator, joined forces to organize this year’s event.

Embracing the spirit of the session’s theme, Alexandra Levine, M.D., M.A.C.P., chief medical officer, Robert Figlin, M.D., Arthur & Rosalie Kaplan Professor of Medical Oncology, and Richard Jove, Ph.D., director of Beckman Research Institute, will together welcome attendees.

“We’re very excited to have these distinguished speakers,” said Rivera. “Dr. Jove has been so supportive of the poster session. Having Dr. Levine and Dr. Figlin join him really emphasizes the collaborative nature of the event.”

At this year’s session, which features 100 posters, organizers will award $1,000 first-place and $500 second-place prizes to posters in four categories: postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows and residents, graduate students and bachelor’s and master’s degree researchers.

The event takes place in Cooper Auditorium from 3 to 7 p.m. For more information, contact Rivera at ext. 68204 or via e-mail at larivera@coh.org.
