FOX Sports chooses City of Hope for its philanthropic program

By Daniel Lacovara

FOX Sports has selected City of Hope as one of three nonprofit organizations to benefit from its “FOX Sports Supports” program in 2009. This initiative raises awareness, funds and volunteerism for national charities.

City of Hope will be the sole charity featured during FOX Sports’ 2009 National Football League (NFL) season, which reaches more than 150 million people. FOX Sports will feature City of Hope in mentions on air during FOX NFL game broadcasts from September through the playoffs in January 2010. Professional football is the nation’s favorite sport, and the NFL attracts more television viewers than any other sports league.

In addition to the game-time coverage, public service announcements featuring NFL players and commentators also will run on FOX news, sports and entertainment stations, promoting City of Hope and its mission and appealing for support. The FOX Sports Supports Web site, www.FOXsportssupports.com, also will prominently feature City of Hope.

FOX Sports Supports was created in 2007 by David Hill, chairman and chief executive officer of FOX Sports Television Group, and Bill Wanger, senior vice president of research and programming. Wanger is a long-time City of Hope supporter. He began through the Sportsmen’s Club and established an annual benefit golf tournament, which eventually became the City of Hope Golf Classic benefiting the Tim Nesvig Lymphoma Fellowship and Research Fund. Wanger nominated City of Hope for this process, which was ultimately determined by a vote of FOX Sports employees.

FOX Sports will make its formal announcement about this partnership in mid-February.
