The American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) has selected Smita Bhatia, M.D., M.P.H., to receive its 2010 Frank A. Oski Lectureship Award.

The annual Frank A. Oski Lectureship remembers Frank A. Oski, M.D., a specialist in pediatric blood diseases and cancer at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and strong advocate for children’s health.

Bhatia will receive the award and deliver a lecture during ASPHO’s 23rd annual meeting, which will be held April 7-10, 2010, in Montreal.

Currently professor and chair of the Department of Population Sciences, Bhatia first joined City of Hope in 1996 and has collaborated widely on research on cancer outcomes, especially studies of the long-term health and well-being of cancer survivors. She chaired the Children’s Oncology Group Late Effects Committee between 2000 and 2008 and directs the Center for Cancer Survivorship and outcomes research programs at City of Hope.

Bhatia has received numerous honors, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Scholar in Clinical Research Award and election as a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

ASPHO’s Oski lectureship honors an outstanding clinical or laboratory investigator in pediatric hematologic oncology whose cutting-edge research compares with the caliber of Oski’s work. Honorees are internationally recognized as accomplished investigators in an aspect of hematologic oncology and must have a doctor of medicine or doctor of philosophy degree, or both.

ASPHO is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to promoting optimal care of children and adolescents with blood disorders and cancer by advancing research, education, treatment and professional practice. The group was incorporated in 1981.
