City of Hope has been named one of four cancer charities that will benefit from a 5k and 1-mile fun run preceding baseball’s All-Star Game in July.
Major League Baseball (MLB) legends, mascots and celebrity guests will take part in the All-Star Game Charity 5k & Fun Run presented by Nike on July 11 in Anaheim, Calif. MLB will donate net proceeds from the event to City of Hope, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Last year’s All-Star Game run drew 8,000 participants; organizers aim to draw 10,000 runners to July’s event.
Participants will run and walk on a baseball-themed course that will begin outside Angel Stadium of Anaheim, home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and host of the 2010 MLB All-Star Game, and travel through the surrounding neighborhood. The course continues through the ballpark with the final stretch of the race on the warning track, giving fans a glimpse of the Big A before the All-Star Game two days later.
The 5k, an officially timed event, will begin at 7:30 a.m. The family-friendly 1-mile fun run will begin at 8 a.m. All finishers will receive a commemorative All-Star medal and T-shirt.
Participants who sign up for the 5k by May 23 will receive a discounted price of $25 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under; the discounted fun run price is $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under.
“We are delighted to be part of the All-Star Game Charity 5k and Fun Run presented by Nike and are grateful to Major League Baseball for their support of our efforts to help patients everywhere conquer cancer,” said Michael A. Friedman, M.D., City of Hope president and chief executive officer. “We are pleased to be alongside the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, as we all work as partners in these lifesaving efforts.”
