Pediatric hematologic oncologist Joseph Rosenthal, M.D., was named chair of the Department of Pediatrics, effective July 5. He is the first holder of the Barron Hilton Chair in Pediatrics.

Rosenthal returned to City of Hope following a brief stint at Children’s Hospital of Central California in Madera, Calif., where he was medical director of pediatric hematology/oncology. He previously served as interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics and director of the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation program at City of Hope.
“Dr. Rosenthal is known as a national leader in improving outcomes for children with cancer, an excellent collaborator and a kind and caring individual,” said Alexandra Levine, M.D., M.A.C.P., chief medical officer. “I am deeply grateful that he has now accepted our invitation to return to City of Hope.”
Rosenthal, whose research interests include pediatric leukemia and blood stem cell transplantation, first joined City of Hope in 1996 after completing a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colo., and two years of fellowship in pediatric cancer research and bone marrow transplantation at Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Orange, Calif.
He earned his medical degree from Tel Aviv University in Tel Aviv, Israel, and obtained a master’s degree in health-care management from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.
