Tom Torlakson, California superintendent of public instruction, hears from Duarte’s youth about the importance of nutrition education and recreation.

Torlakson visited City of Hope and nearby Andres Duarte Elementary School on Aug. 15 to learn about the Eat, Move, Live! summer program, which aims to reduce obesity and other chronic diseases. The community collaborative links the Center of Community Alliance for Research & Education, or CCARE, at City of Hope with the city of Duarte to provide culturally informed nutrition and exercise classes to local children. State officials are considering adopting elements of the program into the “Team California for Healthy Kids” statewide initiative. (Photo by Thomas Brown)
