Children who have overcome cancer ride through Pasadena, Calif., atop the City of Duarte-City of Hope Tournament of Roses Parade float on Jan. 1. The float, themed “Dreams for the Community,” featured lush garden meadows, pine trees and a flowing stream and highlighted the importance of building community while enjoying healthy outdoor activities. The patients, all from California, included Arianna Grelling, 15, of Rancho Cucamonga, Christina Lockhart, 12, of La Crescenta, Eileen Manzanares, 14, of Cudahy, Erika Lowry, 15, of Ridgecrest, Leonard Lopez, 14, of Montclair, and Lindsey Iverson, 16, of Fountain Valley.

Decorated with roses, blue iris, Monte Casino asters, lilies, daffodils, gerbera, lichen moss and cinnamon, the float was the 38th joint entry for Duarte and City of Hope. (Photo by Chris Lovdahl)
