Rose Mary Carroll-Johnson, R.N., M.N., senior research specialist in the Department of Nursing Research and Education, died of cancer at her home on Feb. 21. She was 64.
Carroll-Johnson joined City of Hope from the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s Health Center in October 2008, but her career spanned decades. She was a pioneer in the specialty of oncology nursing and was active in research, mentoring and academic publishing.
She served as editor-in-chief of the Oncology Nursing Society’s (ONS) Oncology Nursing Forum for more than 20 years, was founding editor of the journal Nursing Diagnosis and wrote a number of award-winning books. In 2010, she received the UCLA School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni award. That same year, the ONS awarded its first Rose Mary Carroll-Johnson ONS Distinguished Award for Consistent Contribution to Nursing Literature. The award now is given annually to recognize consistent and significant contributions to oncology nursing literature.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth, and son, David, as well as two sisters and her father. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation, www.onsfoundation.org.
