City of Hope’s Elsie and Robert Pierson Radiation Oncology Center soon will become one of the first radiation oncology centers in the West to offer patients the most expansive array of highly precise imaging technology paired with advanced therapy machines. Three new suites were built to house the latest technologies; the expansion also includes new offices, patient rooms, sunlit waiting areas and a reception desk.

A three-tesla magnet is part of new magnetic resonance imaging technology that can create detailed pictures of cancer within the body. Physicians use these maps to guide beams of radiation or sound waves to the right locations, killing cancer cells even as tumors move during treatment. (Photo by p.cunningham)
